Let’s Go Hawaiian—Petroglyphs

6.10.03 HA 14What is a petroglyph? Lava rock carvings etched into stone by long ago Native Hawaiians to record significant events in their history.

Ancient mariners set sail across the Pacific to settle what is now the Hawaiian Island chain.

seaturtleOne of my favorite Hawaiian residents—the Honu Sea Turtle.

Here are a sampling of petroglyphs on the Big Island—

Let’s Go Hawaiian—How to Cut a Pineapple

The pineapple—fierce on the outside, sweet on the inside—was given its English name for its resemblance to a pine cone. Anyone remember who Kai Barnes compared to a pineapple?

A sailor, Captain John Kidwell, is credited with founding Hawaii’s pineapple industry, importing and testing a number of varieties in the 1800s for commercial crop potential. But it wasn’t until James Drummond Dole arrived in the islands that the pineapple was transformed from an American symbol of friendship and exotic locales into an American household staple.

This is a public service announcement—in the interests of saving sliced fingers—is brought to you today by Aloha Rose.
